Thor is Going to be a Lady and that Weird Guy that Fixed Your Phone Once is in a Huff About It

So, Thor is a wuss who can’t handle his hammer (… ladies?). So his hammer, Mjolnir, is doing what any good hammer would do and taking off to find someone who can handle it.

The “someone” in this case happens to be of the fairer sex — that’s right, Thor will soon be a *gasp* lady!

Surely I won't run out of hammer euphemisms by the end of this post.

… I think.

Naturally, a bunch of morons got in a huff about the change of gender. See, if there’s anything to get angry about, it would be that Marvel chose to make this announcement on The View, which is… just not a good show, we can all agree on that, right?

Really guys? Well, let’s compare the two.

Thor (Male) Thor (Female)
Flowing Blonde Locks
Eyes in Which You Could Just Lose Yourself
A Propensity for Dress-up
A Funny Way of Talkin’
Outrageous Strength
Father Issues
A Massive Hammer (…Ladies)
Lady Parts (EW!)

Hmm. Not much difference, is there?

How about this? Next time a character changes, how about you focus on how the change will affect the story rather than the character’s gender. Then order the comic, read it and if your knickers are still in a twist, launch a nuanced, intelligent argument. Until you can do that, shut the hell up. Your petulant whining is doing nothing for the reputation of comic readers and comics as a whole.

Also, this is far from the first time a woman has been Thor. Remember when Rogue hung out with Mjolnir for a bit? Or, more recently, Thor Girl? Or what about when Odin tricked Thor by changing him into a woman during Alex Ross’ Earth X? This isn’t exactly new, ground-breaking stuff here, fellas.

Ah do delcare, ah’m glad Rogue doesn’t have a forced accent anymore.

Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw - wait, are you just gonna stare in the mirror forever?

Stellar trick, Loki. What dude doesn’t want to be a lady for a little while?

And really, regardless of gender, Thor still pales in comparison to Throg.

Weekend Table Talk: Remembrance Day Long Weekend Edition

Want something to talk about while you and your buddies gather around the pub/Magic the Gathering/Warhammer/Five Finger Fillet/poker table? Well, here are some news bits from the last little while that will fuel your conversation. First up…

Bil Keane, Creator of Family Circus, R.I.P.

Bil Keane, the creator of Family Circus, passed away at 89. The strip was always a mainstay of over 1500 papers across North America. While never being outright hilarious, it operated in the same way Peanuts did, offering readers a slice of unoffensive life for only the cost of a chuckle or a smile.

Batman with Balloons

So, John Morris’  Tumblr decided to bless the world with a bunch of drawings of Batman with balloons, which is as awesome/adorable as it sounds. Particularly impressive is the always excellent Mike Maihack’s piece.

Toronto Artists’ Tribute to Tintin

No matter how the movie turns out, it will never affect the impact that Herge’s Tintin books have had on the world of comics, let alone the world at large. So some artists in Toronto decided to pay tribute to the brilliant fwoopy-haired detective. The result: some cool stuff, some weird stuff, all of it impressive. Check it out here, even if you just want to see Snowy looking adorable. Speaking of Tintin…

Tintin Banned in the U.K., The Vatican Speaks out Against it

Holy shit, something that everyone can finally agree with The Vatican about. When British bookstores banned Tintin in the Congo, the Vatican’s official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, spoke out against the “lunacy.” Whether or not Tintin is a “hero of Catholicism” as they claim is debatable, but at least the Catholic church is taking a stance on something instead of the usual practice of deny, deny, deny then cover up and collect money for the cover up.

Fun Fact: Vatican City is the richest country in the world, but it still can’t afford a decent website for L’Osservatore Romano’s archives.  Or the rest of the site, for that matter. It’s like a 12-year-old made it in Angelfire. In 1999.

Ladies Reading Comics are like… Unicorns?

CNN ran an article at the start of this month, contemplating the scarcity of female comic book readers. Written by Girls Gone Geek co-creator Erica D. Peterman, it’s definitely worth checking out here. It’s not entirely accurate, though, as there are plenty of XXs who read comics, but not all of them let their nerd flag fly.

Brian K. Vaughn is Writing the “Under the Dome” Series

Remember how excellent, groundbreaking and mind-blowing Y: The Last Man was? Of course, who doesn’t? Remember how much you loved Brian K. Vaughn’s masterful storytelling? Of course! Remember how awesome Stephen King’s Under the Dome was? Of co – oh, no, of course not. Well, we’re getting a series on Showtime written by Vaughn and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

Seriously, Stephen King characters, just move out of fucking Maine already. That place has done nothing good for you at all. Like, if you’re living in Maine, and you’re convinced that you’re a fictional character created by Stephen King, pack your shit and move to Manitoba. Oops, too late, it’s looking misty outside.

I’m Ron Fucking Swanson

If you’re not a fan of Parks and Rec, you should be, if only to catch the glory that is Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson. The following image, drawn by Sam Spratt and brought to us courtesy Aziz is Bored, is only a taste of his legendariness (yes, that is now a word).
