Weekend Table Talk: Man of Smaug Edition

Hi everybody! Remember that? Dr. Nick? The Simpsons? Y’know, the show with the yellow people. No, not that documentary about – you know what? You’re a giant racist. Let’s talk comics. First up…

Man of Steel has a new trailer and it looks bad ass

Looks like there’s a lot of fighting and such in it. Which is pretty neat. It may be too early to call, but there appears to be 100 per cent less bastard children in this Superman movie than the last one.

The movie has a trailer for the next Hobbit, as well

Speaking of movies, Fables may be coming to theatres near you

Which may be a good thing, as long as it doesn’t end up being a steaming bowl of rhino piss like Alice in Wondersuck or Jack the Giant Suck (nobody said I had to be creative with the parody titles, alright?).

Solid Snake is now Jack Bauer

That’s right, Kiefer Sutherland is playing everyone’s favourite clone for Metal Gear Solid V. Check out the second video in this article where Kiefer kind of sounds like a wiener when he says, “What does this character want for the future?”

Like “Paperman” but wish it had nerdy icons in it?

You’re in luck. Eddie Snow made some pretty amazing stuff featuring Tony Stark and the cast of Star Trek. Check ’em out at good ol’ io9. I’m posting the full URL because it’s awesome. http://io9.com/tony-stark-cuts-through-the-paperman-flirting-with-cock-511208757

Music Video of the Week: “American Jesus” by Bad Religion

As a 20-year anniversary tribute to the kind of weird first major label album from everyone’s older brother’s favourite punk band.

Oh, and just in case you haven’t seen it yet: Dogs play Bluegrass

Yep.

Weekend Table Talk: The Febrewary Edition

No, that’s not a spelling error – go get a brew. Any brew, alcoholic, non-alcoholic, caffeinated, it doesn’t matter. Now call your friends, family and neighbours and invite them over for a fireside chat. Be sure to tell them to bring a brew as well. Use this opportunity to tell them that you love them and whatever other news you have; come out if you want. Or just force everyone to listen to how much you love comics. That’s where this post comes in. First bit of conversation killer…

Japanese janitors are awesome

Apparently, a Japanese lady stumbled upon a maze her dad spent seven years drawing over thirty years ago. And it’s intense. This guy should have designed the world’s most awesome theme park. It only takes 30 minutes to get in, but once you’re in you’re lost for eternity.

Let's hope if this ever comes to live that it's made of corn.

Or a prison. A psychologically torturous prison.

Paste Magazine made a helpful infographic

So if you ever get confused about all the different fantasy novels out there, just read the infographic. Then say, “Thank you, Paste, for reminding me how many characters’ perspectives you read from in A Song of Ice and Fire!”

Fables and The Unwritten crossover is coming your way in April

Fables is awesome and so is The Unwritten. And it’s no secret that both series’ creators are massive fans of each other, so it would seem that a crossover was inevitable. So order it up right away because it will likely be entertaining. Plus, it gives us this cool-ass image.

Let’s hope they fight. The smart money’s on Bigby.

Ridley Scott is producing a Mind MGMT movie

Which is super exciting if you look at Scott’s track record as producer… Oh, maybe don’t. Anyway, lots of people love this series, so you should probably buy it because you want to fit in, don’t you?

Paperman is all you need to watch

1. Watch.
2. Create something.
3. Repeat.

Music Video of the Week: “How long?” by How to destroy angels_

Trent Reznor got together with his wife and a couple of dudes he works with all the time and made this tune. It’s what you would expect from ol’ Trent… Which is a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view.

Close second: “Hype Man” by Cadence Weapon

Hey, remember when dude was Edmonton’s poet laureate then moved to Montreal?

Tied for second: “The Boys are Back” by Dropkick Murphys

Have an excellent weekend!

Weekend Table Talk: Thai National Sports Day Edition!

Want something to talk about while you and your buddies gather around the pub/Magic the Gathering/Warhammer/Five Finger Fillet/poker table? Well, here are some news bits from the last little while that will fuel your conversation. First up…

This Wikipedia article explains the title.

Okay, second up…

Daniel James Cox is awesome

He draws superheroes, but in a way many artists don’t – with paints and such. And just because he’s so awesome, his painting of Darkseid below hasn’t been re-sized. There is a crap-ton more at his blog and his website that may make your draw hit the floor. (via Comics Alliance)

And you thought Darkseid couldn’t look any bigger and badass.

Dan Dos Santos is awesome, too

Dan Dos Santos made a really sweet picture of Firefly’s Mal Reynolds. Then Nathan Fillion tweeted it. Then people went nuts. Then io9 ran a sweet article detailing how he did it. It’s worth checking out, even if you don’t like the best show ever. Also, check out Dos Santos’ website. It’s cool, too, because he has cool things on it, like the cover to a Fables trade he did.

Where's Jacob, you ask? Bigby ripped his fucking throat out, that's where.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is… something

It has a new trailer, and surely The Academy is paying attention to this one. They might as well give it all of the Oscars right now, ’cause it’s not even a contest. Check it out.

Joe Simon is long gone but never forgotten

Joe Simon, best known for co-creating Captain America, passed away Wednesday at the age of 98. In his many, many years in the comic book industry, Simon wrote, drew and published a ton of stuff. His most famous works, though, stem from his work with the legendary Jack Kirby.

Eduardo Barreto laid down his pencil for good

Eduardo Barreto, prominent Teen Titans artist, died at age 57. The Uruguay native drew several titles for DC over the years, including the following panel that manages to make the Martian Manhunter look kind of badass. Impressive work, to be sure.

From the rare issue where J'on J'onzz runs around stealing dog food. It wasn't a big seller.

The Avengers prelude won’t be a moving prelude, which are the best kinds of preludes

Apparently, Marvel is putting out a prelude for The Avengers. A trailer, perhaps? Nope. A comic. Which is great, because we get more sweet, sweet Avengers action. What’s not so sweet is the general rule that movie tie-in comics suck.

The Dark Knight Rises is leaking like a submarine made of Swiss cheese

The opening of The Dark Knight Rises was supposed to play only on 70 mm IMAX screens before Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. So of course it leaked. The Inside Pulse has one that is still up here. It’s not the best quality, but you get the idea.

Comic Con is Awarding Indian Artists

There is a ton of comic talent in countries outside of North America, as shocking as that may sound. Recognizing that, the organizers of Comic Con are putting on the Comic Con India Awards to honour awesome artists, writers and the rest that India has to offer. Check out the whole article over at the Hindustan Times.

Catwoman, She-Hulk, Wonder Woman and Storm are doing breast self-exams

Apparently, there is a campaign in Mozambique attempting to get women to self-check themselves. To do so, they are using notable female superheroes. Impressive art, to be sure, but it seems unlikely that Marvel and DC signed off on this. Here’s one of them, featuring one the most famous African superheroes, Storm. (via io9)

Calvin and Hobbes is still reigning

Remember all of those comics where Calvin made awesome snow sculptures, which usually bothered his parents to no end? Well, someone added an extra dimension, and made a video of them. If the video below doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit, nothing will.
