Have You Signed the Riverton Rifle’s Petition Yet?

Since hockey’s back and either your jazzed about it and dusting off your jersey, staging a futile attempt at protesting the “rampant greed” or contemplating deleting your Facebook account and living in a Ecuadorian jungle for the next five months. Whatever your plans are, it seems only appropriate to post this…

A year ago, John K. Samson of The Weakerthans released Provincial, an excellent album you should probably buy if you haven’t already.

One of the tracks on this album (a collection of a few songs from previous EPs and some new ones), is “www.ipetitions.com/petition/rivertonrifle/.” If you follow the URL, it leads to the petition to induct Reggie “The Riverton Rifle” Leach to The Hockey Hall of Fame.

It’s also a heckuva good song.

If you don’t know who Reggie Leach is, it’s worth checking out his Wikipedia page.

They're not petitioning for him to get into the Awesome Hair Hall of Fame

Or just talk to an old-timer in Manitoba. Y’know, next time you’re in the neighbourhood.

Anyway, it’s been a year since the album brought attention to the petition and it’s over halfway to the goal of 5,000 signatures. So if you’ve read up on Reggie Leach (or are a complete hockey nerd and already knew all about The Chief) and feel he is deserving, head on over to the site and sign the petition.

There’s also this one, but it’s not nearly as cool – namely, it doesn’t have a song behind it written by one of the best Canadian songwriters.
